Drywall Seams
If you want your drywall seams to look flawless and smooth there are some tips that can help you. The installation of drywall is a project many homeowners do themselves rather than hiring a professional contractor. This is because the task of hanging drywall is one that is usually manageable for those with basic construction skills. If you can follow instructions and handle tools you can install drywall. One of the biggest stumbling blocks when hanging your drywall, or gypsum as it is sometimes called, is getting those pesky seams concealed.
First, gather all the proper tools and supplies. You will need three taping knives -- one six inch, one twelve inch and one fourteen inch which may be called a trowel. You'll also need a drywall pan. Two varieties of compound are necessary. All-purpose compound works for most of the job, although you will need lightweight compound for the last coats because it makes sanding the treated surface much easier. So in review, you'll need to have three taping knives, drywall pan, drywall paper tape, all-purpose joint compound and lightweight joint compound before you begin.
The first step is to apply a thick layer of all-purpose compound to the first seam using your six inch knife. Next, apply the paper tape down the center of the seam, placed in the applied compound. Smooth the tape and compound edges with your taping knife. Then apply a thin layer of all-purpose compound on top of the tape you just applied. This should be allowed to dry for approximately eight hours. The next day, use your second largest taping knife to apply another coat of joint compound. The final step before sanding is to apply one or two coats of lightweight joint compound to the seams with your largest knife or trowel.
After you've completed work on your drywall seams, you will move on to sanding the walls and priming them for interior paint. Your goal is to achieve a smooth, seamless wall. If you're not already an expert on the art of hanging and finishing drywall, there are plenty of online tutorials that can help you. There are also some fantastic books that take you step by step through the entire process. One top title to consider is Drywall: Professional Techniques for Great Results by Myron Ferguson. This book is packed with color photos and plenty of helpful tips and instructions.
