Drywall Studs
If you are considering installing your own drywall you will need to learn the basics first. For example, it is important to understand what drywall studs are and why they are important. A stud is a piece of wood, usually 2' by 4' that frames the wall before the drywall is applied. The drywall is then nailed or screwed to the studs. From there, the drywall is taped, filled with joint compound, sanded, primed and painted. This is the basic procedure, although the actual work itself isn't so simple.
In order to install studs and drywall you will need basic construction experience. Many homeowners already have the studs in place and just need to put the drywall in. There are two main types of drywall -- paper covered and fiberglass covered. The paper covered drywall is the most abundant and affordable. However fiberglass drywall has its own benefits. For example it is ideal for spaces with high moisture content like bathrooms and basements. If you used paper covered drywall in one of these areas you would need to install a vapor barrier, which is not necessary when you use fiberglass drywall.
No matter what kind of drywall you choose you will need to attach it to the studs. This can be done by hand, or more efficiently with a tool called a screwgun. There are palm sized screwguns that fit easily in your hand and take the hard work out of securing your drywall. Once you've attached the drywall to the studs you are ready to move on to the next steps. After a few days work your finished product should be a beautiful smooth wall. Your walls can be painted, textured or even wallpapered if you use the right primer underneath.
Now that you know more about drywall studs, types of drywall and basic installation, you are ready to actually take on this type of project. However you will want to pick up a book about installing drywall or research it online if you've never done it before. Recruiting some knowledgeable helpers is a good idea also. Hanging drywall is a project that many homeowners choose to do themselves, although you can of course hire a professional contractor to do the job if you are not experienced in construction.
