Exterior Drywall
As its name suggests, exterior drywall is a form of drywall designed to go on the exterior of a building. It is often installed over the frame but under the siding, brick or other home building material. It can be used for both commercial and residential applications. Most often the installation of this kind of drywall is handled by a professional contracting company. If you need to hire a contracting company, it is important to do plenty of comparison shopping and obtain a number of estimates before making your final choice.
Interior drywall, on the other hand, is a project you can do yourself if you've got a rudimentary or better grasp on basic construction projects. Drywall is gypsum that is wrapped in either matted fiberglass or heavy paper. It is a far cry from the plaster walls of the past. Old fashioned plaster walls had to be applied in layers. This was a labor intensive process that required skill and expertise. Many of the artisans and craftsmen who specialized in plaster walls created textures and designs for their clients while the plaster was still wet.
While old fashioned plaster is beautiful, it is surpassed by drywall in many areas. Some drywall is enriched with fire resistant and mildew resistant additives. Drywall takes a lot less time to install, because it is simply nailed to your existing studs. If you have steel studs you will need drywall screws, while wood studs can be nailed. An interior drywall project might take you the course of a weekend depending on how large the room is, how experienced you are and whether or not you have any assistance. After the drywall has been installed and taped, you are ready to prime and paint.
Exterior drywall contractors should offer references and show you examples of their work. Many of them have websites where you can view this information. Also when looking for a contractor make sure they are properly licensed and have no negative history with the Better Business Bureau. Also any contractor you are considering should specify in detail how much labor and parts will cost, and how long they anticipate the job will take. Fortunately most drywall projects can be completed within a short period of time compared to more extensive construction projects.
