How To Mud And Tape Drywall
Learning how to mud and tape drywall is necessary if you want to install this product yourself. Drywall is constructed from a gypsum core and covered with paper or fiberglass. It is attached to the studs beneath your wall with nails or screws. Then comes the next part. You may hear this part of the process referred to as taping or finishing. This can be misleading in a way because in addition to tape you will also be using a joint compound. Joint compound is a putty-like substance that fills the seams between drywall sheets.
To do this job you will need to get your supplies ready. Three putty knives of graduating sizes are required for a smooth look. Consider a six-inch, twelve-inch and fourteen-inch trowel or knife. You'll also need two varieties of joint compound. Regular joint compound is used for the first coats while lightweight compound is used to finish the job. Another item you will need for this task is drywall paper tape. Once you have your supplies together and have reviewed the proper instructions you are ready to begin this part of the job.
First, spread a thick layer of compound with your smallest knife down the first seam you are working with. Then, apply your paper tape in the center and press firmly with your knife. You will notice putty smoothing out under the edges of the tape, this is what you want. Cover the tape with a second layer of compound. After this dries, you will want another coat. Your final coat of compound, or even your final two coats, should be the lightweight variety. Once you've finished all your seams you will want to sand them to make sure the surface is even.
After you mud and tape drywall, you can apply a primer and paint. Some homeowners like a textured look, which is achieved with a spray gun and a foam texturizing material that is mixed with water. Others prefer a smooth look which uses traditional interior paint. You can even apply wallpaper over drywall, however it is imperative that you prime the drywall first. Use a primer made especially for wallpaper. This will ensure there will be no damage to your drywall if you ever decide to remove the wallpaper.
