How To Install Drywall
If you desire to learn how to install drywall, there are lots of available resources in books and even online that can help you. Installing drywall can be done by a professional contractor, however some homeowners choose to do the job themselves. If you are a construction beginner it helps to learn more about drywall. You may hear drywall referred to by other terms such as gypsum board, sheetrock or plasterboard. These terms are interchangeable as they describe the same product.
Compare to plaster walls, installing drywall is much easier. For centuries walls were made from layers of plaster applied over laths and studs. While the application of plaster walls required a high level of experience and knowledge, drywall is much easier to apply and can be done in a fairly short period of time depending on your aptitude and how fast you work. One thing you should know is that there are different kinds of drywall. For example, the gypsum plaster used to make the drywall may be enriched with mildew resistant and/or fire resistant protection before the outer layer of paper or fiberglass is applied.
Drywall is installed by nailing it to the existing studs in your home. You will need to create openings for light switches and outlets, of course. For this you'll need a keyhole saw and the proper measurements. Drywall comes in sheets, and can be cut if necessary. While the standard size is four feet by eight feet you can find larger sheets. After you've nailed or screwed the drywall sheets to the studs you are ready to move on to the next installation step which is called taping. With a drywall taping tool, apply joint compound into the edges of the sheets. The compound should be smoothed out and can be sanded after dry for a uniform look.
If you already have experience with drywall, you may not need detailed step by step instructions. However for those who are new and want to learn how to install drywall in detail there are resources that can guide you through each step. One book you should definitely check out is Drywall: Professional Techniques for Great Results by Myron R. Ferguson. Another top title on this subject is Complete Drywall. This particular book is by the Stanley Company, a well-known and respected manufacturer of various construction materials. The more you learn about installing drywall ahead of time, the more confident you'll feel when you're actually doing the job.
